Brazil

For the past 150 years, Brazil has been the world’s foremost coffee producer - no other country matches its importance to the global coffee market. Brazil is the first country Five Elephant has ever sourced coffee from, directly from partners who we still work with to this day. In the not so distant past, the country was viewed as a source of average coffee with uninspired flavors, but this misconception is slowly starting to change. Boundary pushing farmers are exploring new varietals and processing methods, leading to more fruity, complex coffees, and to a richer, healthier coffee production ecosystem.

COLOMBIA

The first commercially grown plots of coffee in Colombia appeared in the first half of the 19th century. Closely tied to the country’s fight for independence from colonial rule, coffee is a central element of Colombian national identity. Due to the mountainous landscape of large parts of the region, and their unique climate conditions, many farmers are able to cultivate specialty-grade beans at very high altitudes. Ever-evolving scientific knowledge and techniques are intertwined with two centuries of experience and traditions, combining together to create a multitude of exciting coffee lots.

Education

We offer our clients a wide range of courses, with the goal of developing better skills for coffee professionals, throughout the entire process of coffee making. These courses are a part of our efforts to build and nurture long term relationships with our wholesale partners. We believe that investing in your staff is important and that the value of that investment is reflected in a higher quality of service, as well as more efficient baristas - and ultimately, happier customers.

EL SALVADOR

Despite its diminutive size, Central America’s is a force to be reckoned with in the global coffee market. Still reeling from a long and brutal civil war, the country offers great infrastructure and cultivation knowledge, and a growing number of young farmers are following the footsteps of their parents, with hopes of returning El Salvador to its past glory as one of the world’s leading coffee exporters. We have visited the country on several occasions over the years, and are constantly working in collaboration with our local partners to improve the variety of lots, experiment with exciting processing techniques, and strengthen the global coffee industry’s ties to the local coffee producing community.

ETHIOPIA

The largest coffee producer and consumer in Africa, and the place from where the plant spread throughout the world, Ethiopia holds a special place in the heart of most coffee lovers. Coffee is a vital part of Ethiopia’s economy, and the local market has seen major changes in recent years, with growing numbers of producers and cooperatives exporting their lots directly and independently of the state-run Commodity Exchange. The region’s coffees are known for their delicate, floral and tea-like qualities and flavors, and the country produces award-winning coffees on a yearly basis.

GUATEMALA

With prime coffee growing conditions, and a government agency providing strong support and direction to the country’s farmers, it’s no surprise that Guatemala was able to establish itself as a leading producer of premium quality coffees. The coffees we source from Guatemala mostly originate in the Huehuetenango region, the highest non-volcanic part of the country. The area’s unique climate conditions - a mixture of high-altitude, hot winds and persistent rainfall - allow for coffees that are grown at very high altitudes, protected from the risk of frost. The country’s lots are characterized by sharp acidity, well-balanced flavors, and a rich mouthfeel.

KENYA

Though suffering three decades of slow decline, the local coffee industry is still responsible for a large chunk of Kenya’s economy. Due to the country’s heavy reliance on smallholder farmers to provide the vast majority of produce, Kenya’s coffee production is precariously sensitive to pests and droughts. Despite all of this, many of the coffees coming out of Kenya are some of the best in the global market - fruity, juicy and clean. Young new cooperatives are working on implementing new techniques for processing and cultivation, and organic production is finally starting to develop on the ground.
