Our Visit to Mogiana, SP Brazil (A short update)
As we release our next Espresso, we would like to give you an update from Brazil, where we have just spent the past weeks visiting partners and working on our coffees for next year.
Two weeks ago, we had the opportunity to visit Mogiana and witness the fires firsthand. During our visit, we spent time with our long-time partner João Hamilton, visiting neighboring farms and seeing the new cupping and training facility. We also explored the Serra do Cigano mill, overseen by FAF Coffee and João Hamilton, where we delved into their latest milling practices, which are driving quality and innovation forward. Our visit was cut short by a raging fire that surrounded the farms and devastated the area. Luckily no one was hurt, but it was a stark reminder of the challenges producers face in Brazil’s current climate crisis.
Our next Brazilian coffee is sourced directly from this mountainous Mogiana region in the São Paulo state, Brazil. Produced by Luciano Vicente, this coffee offers a harmonious balance of vibrant and comforting flavors, featuring notes of red apple, star fruit, and baker’s chocolate. It's a cup that showcases complexity while remaining beautifully balanced.
BRAZIL Sítio Pedra Grande Obata – Espresso
Luciano’s path in coffee is one deeply rooted in family tradition. His father, Antonio Vicente, established the family coffee farm, Vila Vicente, in the town of Caconde, where Luciano was born and raised among the coffee trees. However, after inheriting a portion of the land, Luciano initially struggled to maintain the coffee farm, viewing coffee as a commodity rather than a craft.
That perspective shifted dramatically in 2014, when his neighbor João Hamilton introduced him to the world of specialty coffee. Luciano soon partnered with FAF Coffees and began participating in their agronomist project, which emphasized not just soil care and coffee quality, but something even more advanced—Regenerative Farm Management.
More about FAF Coffees
FAF is now developing a new system based on a four point "High Nature Value" scale of 0-3. This approach to regenerative agriculture focuses on tangible, measurable actions and results, ensuring that every step in farm management directly contributes to the health of the land. Luciano is embracing this forward-thinking method, adopting practices that foster resilience and biodiversity on his farm. The result is a coffee that reflects both his passion for environmental stewardship and his commitment to producing world-class specialty coffee.
In recent years, coffee producers across Brazil have faced unprecedented challenges. The country is experiencing its worst drought in over 40 years, severely impacting the coffee-growing regions. We witnessed the devastation firsthand when fires spread to Mogiana, leaving a lasting impression on us as we saw the resilience of farmers like Luciano, who continue to press forward. These challenges make Luciano’s commitment to regenerative farm practices even more vital, ensuring the long-term sustainability of his farm amidst a changing climate. We look forward to sharing our full origin report soon.
