Essential skills and knowledge for professional baristas
An intensive, two-day course that equips baristas with all the skills and knowledge they need to work in a busy, high-quality coffee shop. Develop an efficient, quality-focused workflow, and perfect your latte art. Learn how to measure extraction with a refractometer, and use that information to get the best flavour out of any type of coffee. Deepen your knowledge of the coffee bean, including sensory skills, and an understanding of origin, variety, and process.
This course is ideal for working baristas with 6+ months experience working in speciality coffee, or for trainee baristas who have completed Barista Skills Foundation and are ready to move to the next stage. Places are strictly limited to ensure everyone can get individual coaching on their practical skills.
In this course, we will learn about:
- Using recipes to balance flavour
- Extraction theory and refractometry
- Workflow for speed, quality, and consistency
- Origin, variety, and process
- Sensory skills for espresso
- Advanced latte art
- Equipment and maintenance
- Hospitality business fundamentals
This course is accredited by the Speciality Coffee Association (SCA), and is worth 10 points towards the SCA Coffee Skills Diploma, an internationally recognised professional qualification for speciality coffee. To earn their certificate, candidates must complete a written and practical exam at the end of the course. Please read more here and register as a Learner if you are signing up for SCA Certification.
