Omar Polanía Cuellar and his wife Dora Daza grow the Colombia variety coffee at their Finca Villa Santana, located in the colorful and mineral-rich mountains of Palermo, Huila. Don Omar is 51, and when we spoke recently, he mentioned the many hardships he and Doña Dora faced this year, due to the pandemic.
Theirs is truly a labor of love—this year the couple carried out all the coffee chores and post-collection processing (not to mention the hand selection of the cherry) by themselves since pickers and workers were basically impossible to find because of the domestic travel restrictions. “the hardest thing for me, was not seeing my family”, Omar told us over the phone—who’s two kids live three hours away by highway. He explained how his kids have been begging him to move to the city and give up the tedious, coffee-growing way of life. But he will never will. Omar is one of the most passionate and dedicated, not to mention sweet-spoken and kind, producers we know.
Villa Santana spans a total surface area of 4.2 hectares. They bought this property in 1995 and kept the prior owner’s name—Santana—which is a pretty common practice in coffee-producing regions. The Finca is mostly flat and the soil is mostly silt. We appreciate that Omar is a self-professed “enemy of pesticides”.
Omar has been working with specialty coffee since 2010. “I like to say that the farmer is special, not just the coffee”, Omar said when we asked about his experience with specialty coffee. We find that this sentiment really rings true; it takes a special grower to produce high-quality coffee. We already look forward to what next year’s upcoming harvest brings to Villa Santana.
